On Negros Island, the "very large serpent" known as the mameleu was said to live in the sea. It was thirty fathoms long and had a body the size of a carabao. It also had a head the size of a carabao, two white horns, eyes like two torches, and "two jets of fire" emerging from its orbits. Its scales, which were the size of dinner plates and were "resistant," were lengthy and hard, with teeth that were about two cuartas long.
